Dr. Fred Colbourne is a psychology-science professor at the University of Alberta. He studies ischemic and hemorrhagic brain injuries that result from stoke and related conditions. His lab uses animal models and a wide array of research techniques and tools to better understand the pathophysiology of cell damage (e.g. the role of brain edema) and dysfunction (e.g. alterations in cell volume).

Join us for a panel discussion and Q&A with two researchers who have different perspectives on how language impacts social cognition in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Dr. Aparna Nadig is an associate professor at McGill University’s School of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Her research focuses pragmatic development, social communication, and language and communication in individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Dr. Ryan Stevenson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Brain & Mind Institute at the University of Western Ontario. His research focuses on sensory perception across the lifespan, specifically regarding how changes in sensory perception influence cognitive processes such as speech perception. His work includes research with neurotypical populations and special populations such as individuals with ASD and cochlear implant users.

Dr. Liisa Galea is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and a member of the Centre for Brain Health at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She is also Director of the Graduate Program in Neuroscience, Lead of the Women’s Health Research Cluster and a Scientific Advisor for the Women’s Health Research Institute. Her research investigates how sex hormones influence brain health and disease in both females and males. Dr. Galea has over 17,000 citations and has been a cornerstone in the field of neuroendocrinology. The main goal of her research is to improve brain health for women and men by examining the influence of sex and sex hormones on normal and diseased brain states such as depression and Alzheimer’s disease.
